Consider Specialty & UV Coatings To Embellish Freemiums
Consider Specialty Coatings To Embellish Freemiums
by Tom Bulliet
Fundraisers are always looking for premiums to make their appeals stand out. New technologies abound. To me, though, there’s nothing like the physicality of a printing piece. With printing, you can both capture the prospect’s eyes and appeal to their tactile senses. The impression you leave motivates potential donors to respond.
Tests show that response rates are higher from direct mail featuring greeting cards, pocket calendars, calendars, and other printed freemiums. Statistically, the quality and perceived value of freemiums also increase the amount of the donation.
With that in mind, smart fundraisers look for a cost-effective way to make their printed piece attention grabbing. Embellishments like foil stamping, embossing, or specialty papers can be expensive.Specialty coatings are a cost-effective alternative. These add visual dimension and tactile sensation, thus engaging and motivating donors to contribute.
We have found that several specialty coatings work well to embellish note cards, pocket calendar covers, calendar covers, and brochures. For instance, a high-gloss UV coating applied to the entire surface of a piece gives a polished look. In addition, the hard surface prevents marking and scuffing.
Alternatively, instead of covering the entire surface of the piece, adding a spot UV to a particular portion of the design gives a dimensional look. By the same token, a patterned textured dull UV coating can be used to simulate the look and feel of linen or laid papers. Another option is spot raised UV, which can add the dimensional look and feel of embossing. A raised UV pattern also creates the illusion of a leathery, wooden, sandy, or cloth-like texture.
Other options include coating a piece with a glitter UV to add sparkle or using a soft touch aqueous to give the piece a velvety feel.
The great advantage of all of these coatings is that they can all be applied inline on press without the added time and cost of separate operations.
You’ll find plenty of specialty coating choices to catch the attention of and inspire action from your prospective and current donors. Bring your design and production team together early in the concept stage to explore how embellishments created with economical specialty coatings can garner greater attention and response.
